According to the Federal Act on Hospitals and Sanatoria (KAKuG), hospitals include general hospitals, special hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, convalescent homes, nursing homes for the chronically ill and sanatoria. Independent outpatient clinics are not included. The source of data is the hospital statistics compiled by the Ministry of Health. In addition to providing data on hospitals according to public law, legal entities and care functions, the statistics include the number of beds (officially approved or systemised beds as well as beds actually set up) as well as information on the medical and non-medical health care staff in hospitals.

Information on the number of practising physicians provides an insight into the medical care situation of the Austrian population. The data is provided by the Austrian Medical and Dental Associations.
