The Farm Structure Survey collects data on the structure and production methods of agricultural and forestry holdings, including information on the animal housing types on livestock holdings.

According to EU legislation, a census is conducted every ten years, with sample surveys in three-year or four-year intervals in between. The module on livestock housing is not included in every survey but in the 2010 census, 2020 census and 2026 sample survey. All agricultural and forestry holdings meeting the legislation's minimum requirements must participate. Data on the animal housing types are collected directly by surveying the agricultural and forestry holdings.

For the census, regional data are available - partially at the municipality level. In applicable sample survey years, the smallest geographical unit available is that of the federal province.
