Statistics Council

The Statistics Council (§§ 44 to 47 Federal Statistics Act) of Statistics Austria is composed of 16 independent members, who are appointed by the Federal Chancellor or delegated by 12 institutions (one member each) for a term of office of five years. All Members hold the professional qualifications needed to perform Statistics Council duties. Should any member leave the Statistics Council before the end of his/her term of office, a new member is appointed to fill his/her position. Upon expiry of its term of office, the Statistics Council remains in post until the first meeting of the new Statistics Council.

Main tasks:

The Statistics Council’s main duties are (§ 47. (1) Federal Statistics Act):

• prepare an annual report on compliance with the Special Principles for Statistics Austria (Art. 24 Federal Statistics Act)
• issue recommendations on the design of administrative data, so that it can also be used for statistical purposes
• issue recommendations on the co-ordination of federal ministries and Federal Statistics bodies on matters concerning statistics for the Federal Government and the European Union
• issue statements on draft regulations /national laws and regulations/EU legal acts
• issue statements and recommendations on work programs and budgets.

The members are appointed and delegated as follows:

(1) Four members are appointed by the Federal Chancellor

(2) Five members are delegated by the following Federal Ministers (one member each):

• the Federal Minister of Finance
• the Federal Minister responsible for Economic Affairs
• the Federal Minister responsible for Labour Affairs
• the Federal Minister responsible for Social Affairs
• the Federal Minister responsible for Agriculture and Forestry

(3) Seven members are delegated by the following institutions (one member each):

• the Austrian Central Bank
• the Austrian Economic Chamber
• the Presidential Conference of Austrian Chambers of Agriculture
• the Federal Chamber of Labour
• the Austrian Association of Municipalities
• the Austrian Association of Cities and Towns
• the Conference of Provincial Governors
