Expenditure on social protection amounted
to €117 bn or 29.3% of GDP in 2019

– In 2019, social expenditure in Austria
totalled €117 bn, as Statistics Austria reports. This represents 29.3%
of the gross domestic product (GDP). Compared to the previous year,
growth of social expenditure (+3.7%) was higher than of GDP (+3.2%).
As a result, the social expenditure-to-GDP
ratio slightly increased (2018: 29.2%) after reaching its peak
in 2015 and 2016 (29.9%).
