Population reaches 8.93 million at the beginning of 2021

Vienna, 2021-02-11 – According to preliminary results released by Statistics Austria, 8 933 346 people were living in Austria on 1 January 2021. In 2020, the resident population grew by 32 282 (+0.36%). Hence, population growth was a bit lower than in the previous year (2019: 42 289; +0.48%).

At the beginning of 2021 1.53 million foreign citizens were living in Austria, representing a share of 17.1% of the total population (compared to 16.7% on 1 January 2020). Germans (208 767 persons; +4.39%) were still the largest group of foreigners living in Austria; Romanian nationals (131 788; +6.75%) followed in the second place.
