Deaths of older people above average from 16 March to 5 April 2020

Vienna, 2020-04-20 – In the week from 30 March to 5 April 2020, the number of deaths in Austria was above average, as preliminary data from Statistics Austria show. In total, 1 788 persons died during this week, which represents a 13% increase compared to the average number of deaths in the respective week from 2016 to 2019. Almost exclusively, the population aged 65 years and older was affected by the increase (+201 to 1 549 deaths), while the deaths of the population below 65 years of age remained almost unchanged (+7 to 239 deaths). Excess deaths for the older population can be already observed since calendar week 12, the week starting from 16 March 2020.
