In the 2019/20 winter semester, 274 691 Austrians (no doublecounts) were studying at tertiary educational institutions as either regular students or students of courses of studies (Lehrgang). A total of 188 636 Austrian students were pursuing regular studies at public universities. The 15 private universities had 6 438 Austrian regular students. 44 870 regular students with Austrian citizenship were studying at a university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule). 15 302 Austrians were enrolled at university colleges of teacher education and 114 domestic regular students were enrolled at three schools of theology.
101 359 foreign students were studying in Austria in the winter semester 2019/20. At public universities 29% of all regular students were foreign citizens while 47% of students at private universities were not Austrian citizens. The proportion of foreign students at universities of applied sciences was 19%, at university colleges of teacher education 7%. At theological schools 63% of the regular students were foreign citizens. The majority of foreign students came from Europe. 71% of foreign students were EU citizens, another 16% citizens of other European states.
In the winter semester 2019/20, the proportion of women among regular domestic students at the public universities was 53%. The number of women as a proportion of the total number of Austrian regular students at private universities was 60%. At universities of applied sciences 51% of regular students were female, at university colleges of teacher education 75%. At schools of theology 38% of regular students were female.
The most frequented studies at public universities were humanities, science and technology. Private universities focused on medicine, economics and social sciences, humanities and arts. Universities of applied sciences specialized in business administration and engineering.
