Survey of Adult Skills (PIAAC)

Until now statements and discussions about the quantitative distribution of key skills (e.g. literacy) among adults in Austria relied on estimations and assumptions. This lack of data was closed, due to the participation of Austria in the Survey of Adult Skills, a product of the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). For the first time, there is a valid source of data on adults’ proficiency in literacy, numeracy and problem-solving in technology-rich environments in Austria.

The PIAAC survey 2011/12 is the most comprehensive study about key information-processing skills (for adults aged 16-65) to date und was conducted across 24 countries. In Austria the survey was financed by the federal ministry of labor, social affairs and consumer protection and the federal ministry of education and women’s affairs. The national project management as well as data collection and data processing were conducted by Statistics Austria.
