– 20.9 million tonnes (t) of goods were transported by rail
in the second quarter of 2020, as Statistics Austria reports. Compared
to the second quarter of the previous year, this represents a decrease
by 19.6% in transport volume. The transport performance on Austrian
territory amounted to 4.4 billion tonne-kilometers (tkm) and declined
by 21.0% compared to the second quarter of 2019. In comparison, there
was a slight increase in the first quarter of 2020 with a transport
volume of 25.9 million t (+2.6%) and a transport performance of 5.5 billion tkm
(+1.6%) compared to the respective quarter of the previous year.
Freight transport on the Austrian section of the
Danube registered a transport volume of 2.2 million t and an inland
transport performance of 0.4 billion tkm. This was a comparatively moderate
decrease of 2.2% and 4.8% respectively compared to the second quarter
of the previous year.
