Fewer new registrations in July 2020: motor vehicles -13.2%; passenger cars -21.1%

Vienna, 2020-08-11 – According to Statistics Austria, a total of 37 953 new motor vehicles were registered in July 2020, 13.2% less than in July of the previous year. The number of new registrations of passenger cars (24 784 vehicles) fell by 21.1% compared to July 2019. Passenger cars accounted for 65.3% of all new motor vehicle registrations.

In July 2020, new registrations of petrol-driven passenger cars fell by 37.8% (share: 44.2%), diesel-driven passenger cars by 19.3% (share: 38.3%). Increases were recorded for the following alternatively driven passenger cars: petrol hybrids (+169.2% or +1 604 new registrations), diesel hybrids (+83.9% or +308 new registrations) and electric cars (+49.6% or +353 new registrations).

Among the ten most important passenger cars, in July 2020 new registrations rose for Skoda (+8.0%), Renault (+7.0%) and Mercedes (+4.5%); declines were reported for VW (-30.1%), Hyundai (-23.2%), Peugeot (-22.1%), Audi (-21.7%), BMW (-15.1%), Ford (-10.9%) and Seat (-9.1%).

Compared to the same month last year, the commercial vehicle market recorded more new registrations for lorries category (cat.) N3 (+74.8%) and tractors used for agriculture and forestry (+14.8%). There were fewer new registrations for lorries cat. N1 (-6.2%), lorries cat. N2 (-5.7%) and articulated lorries (-5.3%).

Among the two-wheelers, more motorcycles (+21.2%) but fewer scooters (-9.6%) were registered.

January to July 2020: one third less passenger cars

In the period January to July 2020 137 571 new passenger cars were registered, which represents a decrease of 33.6% compared to the same period last year. Petrol-driven passenger cars fell by 44.0% to 63 706, diesel-driven passenger cars by 34.1% to 52 387, while among the passenger cars with alternative drives increases were recorded for petrol hybrids (+95.1%), diesel hybrids (+59.8%) and electric cars (+4.5%).

Information on methods, definitions: Motor vehicle statistics (registrations of new and used vehicles as well as the stock of vehicles) are secondary statistics, compiled on the basis of daily data files sent to Statistics Austria by Austria’s association of insurance companies (VVO). VVO, in turn, receives data by the insurances’ registrations offices, responsible for registrations, de-registrations and rectifications of motor vehicles and trailers. 
Within motor vehicle statistics, all motor vehicles, once nationally or internationally registered, are levied, irrespective of the registration’s duration.
