Freight transport volume on the river Danube increased by 18.2% in 2019

Vienna, 2020-03-27 – A total of 8.5 million tonnes (t) of goods was transported on the Austrian section of the Danube in the year 2019, as reported by Statistics Austria. This represents an increase of 1.3 million t (+18.2%) compared to 2018, which was affected by a decrease of 25.1% to only 7.2 million t due to low water. Regarding long time series, the transport volume in 2019 was the second lowest since 1995, whereas the volume in 2018 had been the lowest in this period.

The total transport performance (i.e. the product of transport volume and distance travelled) was 8.4 billion-tonne kilometres (tkm) and therefore by 1.4 billion tkm (+20.7%) higher than in 2018. Around 1.7 billion tkm (+15.2%) of the transport performance took place on the Austrian section of the Danube.

For international goods dispatch a growth by 27.1% to 2.3 million t was reported and the international goods receipt rose by 10.5% to 4.2 million t. Transit through Austria increased by 33.2% to 1.8 million t. For inland transport a decline of 8.3% to 0.3 million t was reported in the reference year.
