10.9% decrease of new passenger car registrations in February 2020

Vienna, 2020-03-10 – In February 2020, the number of new passenger car registrations (21 067) decreased by 10.9% compared to February of the previous year, as Statistics Austria reports. New registrations of petrol-driven passenger cars declined by 25.1% (share: 46.1%), those of diesel cars by 10.3% (share: 39.3%). The number of newly registered electric cars rose by 42.0% (share: 4.7%). New registrations of motor vehicles as a whole declined by 9.4% in February 2020.

The passenger car makes with the highest registration figures were again VW (share: 15.7%), Skoda (share: 9.8%) and Seat (share: 7.6%). Within the Top 10 car makes, increases were reported for Mercedes (+34.3%), Hyundai (+26.3%), BMW (+3.6%) and Fiat (+1.3%). The strongest decreases were recorded for Ford (-26.8%), VW (-25.4%), Opel (-23.1%) and Renault (-16.5%). Skoda (-6.4%) and Seat (-2.2%) documented single-digit declines.

The market for new commercial vehicles recorded more registrations for tractors used for agriculture and forestry (+34.1%). Lorries category (cat.) N2 (-37.5%), lorries cat. N3 (-13.4%), lorries cat. N1 (-0.9%) as well as articulated lorries (-21.1%) were on a downward trend.

Regarding two-wheelers, fewer motorcycles (-20.5%) and scooters (-12.2%) were registered.

Information on methods, definitions: Motor vehicle statistics (registrations of new and used vehicles as well as the stock of vehicles) are secondary statistics, compiled on the basis of daily data files sent to Statistics Austria by Austria’s association of insurance companies (VVO). VVO, in turn, receives data by the insurances’ registrations offices, responsible for registrations, de-registrations and rectifications of motor vehicles and trailers. 
Within motor vehicle statistics, all motor vehicles, once nationally or internationally registered, are levied, irrespective of the registration’s duration.
