Tourism winter season 2018/19 started with an increase of 7.2% in overnight stays

Vienna, 2018-12-21 – For November 2018, the first month of the 2018/19 tourism winter season, 5.19 million overnight stays were reported, according to preliminary results by Statistics Austria. This represents an increase of 7.2% compared to November 2017. The overnight stays of non-resident tourists increased by 8.9% and reached 2.95 million, the nights spent by resident tourists increased by 5.0% to 2.24 million.

The highest relative rises of nights spent concerning non-residents were reached by tourists from Italy (+27.5%), USA (+23.0%) and France (+17.1%). Also the number of nights spent by guests from the most important countries of origin, Germany (+7.8%), Switzerland/Liechtenstein (+7.2%) and United Kingdom (+10.2%) rose compared to November of the previous year. Among the other most important countries of origin, only nights spent by guests from Sweden (-8.2%), Czech Republic (-13.6%) and Russia (-2.1%) showed declines compared to November 2017.

Nights spent in commercial holiday dwellings (+29.7%) showed the most dynamic rise of all accommodation establishments, while in 5-/4-star hotels the increase amounted to 6.2%.

Furthermore, the number of arrivals rose in November 2018 by 8.9% and reached 2.17 million.

For the period January to November 2018, 138.41 million overnight stays and 41 million arrivals were registered, which means a growth of 3.3% compared to the same reference period of 2017.
