Supply balance sheets are used to represent the supply and use of agricultural production (food and feedstuffs). One key aspect is to provide information on the food sector subordinated to agriculture. But the balance sheets also provide information on such parameters as the degree of self-sufficiency or per capita consumption.
Over the past crop year 2018/19, Austria’s agriculture produced 4.8 million tons of cereal, 728 000 tons of fruit, 634 500 tons of vegetables, 697 900 tons of potatoes, 386 900 tons of oil seeds, 2.15 million tons of sugar beet and 2.75 million hl of wine
The total agricultural foreign trade volume (crop and animal sector) for this period amounted to 24.2 bn euros (imports: 12.4 bn; exports: 11.8 bn). This corresponds to a share of 7.8 per cent of the total foreign trade volume of 311.1 bn euros.
The crop sector comprises 12 main groups with 90 detailed balances and refers to the period from July 1, to June 30 (crop year). For the wine balance, the crop year runs from August 1, to July 31; for sugar the crop year runs from October 1, to September 30.
In 2019 domestic agriculture produced the following animal products: 910 300 tons of meat, 3.82 million tons of cow’s, sheep´s and goat´s milk, 2.09 billion pieces of eggs and 4 600 tons of fish. Domestic consumption amounted to 832 600 tons of meat (93.8 kg per capita), 729 600 tons of drinking milk (82.2 kg per capita), 2.15 billion eggs (242 pcs per capita) and 70 100 tons of fish (7.9 kg per capita). The degree of self-sufficiency was 113% for cheese (incl. processed cheese), 109% for meat, 86% for eggs and 69% for butter.
The total agricultural foreign trade volume (crop and animal sector) for this period amounted to 25.0 bn euros (imports: 12.7 bn; exports: 12.3 bn). This corresponds to a share of 8.0% of the total foreign trade volume of 311.3 bn euros.
The animal sector comprises 6 main groups with 27 detailed balances and refers to the period from January 1, to December 31 (calendar year).
