This survey, to be conducted every five years under the provisions of EU-regulation 1337/2011, provides comprehensive data on the area planted and the variety of fruit planted in certain fruit plantations as well as detailed information on the number and the age of trees and their regional density in Austria.
With reference date of 15 November 2017 Statistics Austria carried out the survey on fruit plantations based on the national Regulation BGBl. II Nr 247/2017.
Due to the results, 3 909 holdings cultivated fruits,
which is 7% less compared to the previous comprehensive survey 2007.
The total area reached 15 700 ha
While the area of apples with 7 700 ha decreased by 3% compared to the survey 2012 (where only apples, pears, apricots and peaches were included), apricots showed a significant increase by 17% to 1 000 ha. Pears also registered a surplus of 15% to 620 ha.
As the survey criteria 2017 have been partly changed considering the previous surveys (2007 and 2012) the comparability to them is limited.
A production of 192 700 tons of dessert fruits was achieved in 2020, as Statistics Austria reports. This was 13% below the ten years' average and 14% lower than the previous year's production.
Pome fruit brought a quantity of 168 300 tons
